Stats & Facts:
Solomon Islands never were able to defeat the Socceroos in football history but at least the underdog achieved one draw in 10 games against Australia. Malicious gossip has it that the draw has happened on purpose when Solomon Islands needed one more point to finish second during OFC Nations Cup Qualifier groupstage. With this result New Zealand finished third and Australia had to face Solomon Islands again in two legs to win the OFC Nations Cup which was the easier opponent compared to the all time rivals New Zealand. (Australia has won both games 5-1 & 6-0)
06th June 2004 – Australia 2 – 2 Solomon Islands

It should take another 11 years to win their next trophy, this time the AFC trophy.

Nike already has used an interim design jersey for the Socceroos in 2004 when Australia faced South Africa in a friendly match. One year later Nike again has used an interim shirt for Australia and again versus South Africa which has been only used for this single game. Therefore it is hard to say if this kit has been known as their „home“ or „away“ jersey.

Stats & Facts:
For the rest of 2005 and the upcoming World Cup Qualifier campaign Nike decided Australia to play in traditional green & gold jerseys, home & away. It was the very first World Cup Qualifier campaign between the FFA and Nike and a successful one as well. The Socceroos were able to win the final World Cup Qualifier clash against Uruguay, the big rival from South America. A heartbeat penalty shootout in which Australia had the better goalkeeper with legendary Mark Schwarzer who saved two penalties. Mark Bresciano opened the door for this penalty shootout with his goal and 1-0 victory after 120min.

Stats & Facts:
It was a retirement match of Zeljko Kalac (54 caps), Tony Vidmar (76 caps), Stan Lazaridis (60 caps) and Tony Popovic (58 caps) who finished his Socceroos career with a goal. Michael Beauchamp was kind of a party crasher (don’t get us wrong) when he was substituted in 90th min and scored an own goal to equalize the game result. Still a big party afterwards for the four Socceroos legends who retired that day.
