This was the first match for Frank Arok as Australia’s national coach due to the fact that coach Les Scheinflug elected to go with the Young Socceroos to Mexico. The team of Arok played in total 3 friendly matches against England until the return of Scheinflug beginning of December for the Merlion Cup, which the Socceroos have won. It has been the last time with Scheinflug as Socceroos coach and Arok finally started to manage the Socceroos from 1984 till 1990.

1993 – 1994

Stats & Facts:
After the retirement of Socceroos coach Frank Arok it has been Scottish-born football player and coach Eddie Thomson to take over the national team of Australia. Eddie Thomson, who already has been the Socceroos assistant coach from 1984 until 1988, should accompany the team in green and gold for 6 years. His last match as Socceroos coach has been in October 1996, a friendly match against Saudi Arabia which ended scoreless. The ASF (Australian Soccer Federation) appointed his deputy Argentine-born assistant coach Raul Blanco as Australia’s caretaker coach for the next two Oceania Cup matches. The Socceroos have won both matches and Blanco stayed undefeated before Terry Venables ended his caretaker coach period.

18th January 1997, Australia vs New Zealand, Melbourne (Australia)

Stats & Facts:
1997 started with a new coach at the side of the Socceroos. Terry Vanables hasn’t lost any match till the final World Cup qualifying matches against Iran, and even in both games he stayed undefeated but the away goals rule stopped his ’98 World Cup dream. Already in June 1998 Terry retired as Socceroos manager and longtime assistant coach Raul Blanco has taken over again as caretaker coach of Australia.

2005 – 2006

03rd September 2005, Australia vs Solomon Islands, Sydney (Australia)

Stats & Facts:
In December 2005, Neeskens was appointed assistant coach of the Australian national team, once again at the request of Guus Hiddink, the Socceroos manager at the time. He worked alongside Hiddink and Graham Arnold as part of their World Cup 2006 campaign, and even afterwards he remained involved with the Australian national team. On 07th October 2006, under contract with FC Barcelona, Neeskens was alongside the Australian national team’s bench in a friendly match between Paraguay while visiting Australia for a short break. After the 2006 World Cup, Neeskens returned to FC Barcelona to replace Henk ten Cate in the club’s technical staff, reuniting with Frank Rijkaard.
